Autistic students bring unique strengths to the classroom—intense focus, pattern recognition, deep knowledge in special interests—but traditional teaching approaches often misinterpret their needs as problems rather than differences requiring simple adjustments.
An estimated 1 in 31 children in the United States is identified as autistic (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2025), yet most classroom guidance for students with autism still centers on what needs to be corrected rather than what can be built upon.
This gap between diagnosis rate and strengths-based autism support is where many well-intentioned classrooms lose ground. Integrating autistic students requires educators to lead with curiosity rather than judgment and to understand their strengths (Wright et al., 2024).
