A client describes a partner who was never physically violent, yet left her feeling like she was losing her mind.
Another discloses that leaving would mean losing access to their only shared bank account.
A third cannot describe last night beyond, “He went quiet, three days straight.”
These are different tactics with the same underlying pattern. Without a shared clinical vocabulary for naming that pattern, each disclosure risks being treated as an isolated complaint rather than the course of conduct it actually is.
This guide gives practitioners that vocabulary, mapping types of emotional abuse against three frameworks: the Power and Control Wheel (Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs [DAIP], n.d.), Stark’s (2007) coercive control, and Forward and Frazier’s (1997) fear, obligation, and guilt (FOG).
