Clients often tell us they feel “stressed,” “overwhelmed,” or “upset,” without realizing that these broad labels offer relatively little information about the underlying emotional experience.
Effective emotion regulation begins with emotion identification: the ability to recognize, differentiate, and accurately label your emotional experiences (Gross, 2015).
As researchers have sought to better understand why some people identify emotions more effectively than others, one concept has received growing attention: emotional granularity, which is the ability to distinguish among emotions with greater precision (Barrett et al., 2001; Kashdan et al., 2015).
This article explores the science behind emotion identification, explains why emotional granularity matters, and outlines how practitioners can strengthen clients’ emotional awareness and emotion-labeling skills.
